Plug or firewood, cedar or spruce
Four choices change how your sauna feels and what it costs to run. Here is what each one means on a Tuesday night in February.
Electric heater
An 8 kW heater with 60 lb of stones, or 10.5 kW in the 6-person. Start it from your phone on the drive home and it is at 175°F in about 35 minutes. Costs roughly $1.10 a session to run.
Wood-fired heater
A steel stove with a glass door, 12 ft of insulated chimney and a spark arrestor. No electrician, no circuit. Light it, and 45 minutes and an armful of birch later you are at 180°F.
Thermo-spruce
Nordic spruce baked at 400°F until it turns honey brown. The heat treatment makes it hold its shape and shrug off rot without any chemicals. Knot-free on every bench.
Western red cedar
Lighter, stays cooler to the touch and fills the room with that cedar-chest smell for years. Weathers to silver outside unless you oil it once a year.

You reserve, we look at your yard · Day 1
Send the build from the configurator and a $500 deposit. On a 20-minute video call we check the spot, the access for a flatbed, and where the power or the chimney goes.

The pad and the paperwork · Day 2 to 5
We send a one-page site plan. You lay a level gravel pad, or our crew does it for $650. If your town wants a permit, we fill in the form and send you the drawings.

Built in our Lake Arden shop · Day 5 to 18
Staves cut, benches sanded, the heater wired and fired once on the bench. You get a photo of your sauna with your name on the work order before it leaves.

Set, connected, first fire · Around day 21
It arrives assembled on one flatbed. Dana Holm’s crew sets it on the pad, connects the heater and lights it with you. Most installs take five hours.
You need a level spot 2 ft bigger than the sauna on every side, and a path 9 ft wide for the flatbed or our small crane.

Four installers, one flatbed and a small crane, all on our payroll. Dana has set more than 600 saunas since Joel Brandvold built the first one behind his own house in 2019. Nobody we have never met shows up in your yard.

Do I need a permit for a backyard sauna?
It depends on your town. Many treat a sauna under 120 square feet like a garden shed and need nothing, others want a simple accessory building permit. Send your zip from the configurator and we tell you which on the first call. If you need one, we fill in the form and supply the drawings at no charge.
What does the electric heater need from my house?
A dedicated 240V circuit, 40 amps for the 2 and 4-person saunas and 50 amps for the 6-person. A licensed electrician usually charges $600 to $1,500 depending on the distance to your panel. We send them the wiring diagram, and our crew connects the heater on install day. The wood-fired heater needs no power at all.
Can you install in winter?
Yes, we install all year. Frozen ground is actually easier for the flatbed. The only thing we cannot do is lay a gravel pad on ground that is frozen and uneven, so in December to February we set on adjustable steel piers instead, at the same price.
What is the warranty?
Five years on the structure, staves and roof, two years on the heater and one year on the lighting and glass seals. If anything leaks, cracks or stops heating, we come out to fix it. You oil the outside once a year and we send a reminder with a how-to video.
How does financing work, and does checking my rate affect my credit?
Checking your rate is a soft check and does not affect your credit score. Our sample terms are 84 months at 10.29% APR with nothing down, which puts a $8,900 barrel at $149 a month. You can pay it off early with no fee. These terms are samples for illustration, and real rates depend on your credit.
