Two generations, one rule about trees.

In 1986 Frank Oakhurst quit the county road crew, bought a used pickup and started climbing trees for his neighbours on Ferris Road. His boys spent their summers dragging brush and learning knots in the back yard.

Matt and Joe run the crew now. The trucks are newer and the gear is better, but the rule Frank started with has not changed.

What we do, and what it starts at.

Every job gets a written price after a walk around the tree. These are where prices start, so you know the ballpark before anyone knocks on your door.

Pruning and deadwood

Climbed by hand, cut to the branch collar, never topped. We take out deadwood, lift limbs off the roof and thin the crown so wind passes through.

Tree removal

When a tree has to go, we climb it and lower it in sections on ropes, piece by piece, so nothing lands on your fence, garden or roof.

Stump grinding

Ground below the grass line, the chips raked back into the hole or left for your beds. Done the same day as a removal, or on its own.

Steel cable and rods installed high in the crown to hold a weak fork together. Often the difference between keeping a big tree and losing it.

Also: storm cleanup, hedge and shrub work, lot clearing for small builds, and free wood chips if you want them for your beds.

Six species make up most of the calls we get in the valley. Pick the one in your yard to see the trouble signs we look for, what the crew does about them, and how often we can save it.

The tree our family is named for, and the one we are proudest to keep standing. A healthy oak outlives all of us, so we treat it slowly and on its own calendar.

What you might notice

  • Dead branches in the top of the crown, bare while the rest is in leaf
  • Leaves browning from the edges in midsummer
  • New driveway, patio or trenching inside the drip line in the last few years

What the crew does

  • Prune in late fall and winter only, when beetles that spread disease are not flying
  • Clear deadwood by climbing, so no heavy machine rolls over the roots
  • Mulch and fence off the root zone before any building work starts

Most oaks we are called to are saved. Removal is rare and a last resort.

  1. 1Get everyone clear

    Keep people and pets out of the house rooms under the tree and away from the yard where it fell. Hanging limbs can drop hours later.

  2. 2Stay away from wires

    If a line is down or touching the tree, call the power company first, then us. We never start work until the line is made safe.

  3. 3Photos for insurance

    Take pictures from a safe distance before anything is moved. We send your insurer a written report and itemised invoice.

We tarp and make safe the same night when we can, then come back in daylight to lift the tree off properly with ropes and rigging.
